When you’re moving to Houston, start with your job location.
Houston is huge. Your favorite neighborhood may sit across town from your office. That can turn a 20-minute drive into a daily 60-minute grind.
We recommend choosing your home around your main work hub first. Then, compare lifestyle, schools, housing prices, and amenities.
This guide shows where to live in Houston based on where you work. We’ll cover realistic commute ranges, major roads, transit options, and relative prices.
First, understand Houston’s commute map
Houston’s major job hubs include:
- Energy Corridor
- Texas Medical Center
- Downtown Houston
- Galleria and Uptown
- Greenway Plaza
- Port Houston and the Ship Channel
- Bay Area and NASA/Clear Lake
The city’s key highways shape nearly every commute:
- I-10 serves Katy, Memorial, and the Energy Corridor.
- US-290 serves Cypress and northwest Houston.
- I-45 serves The Woodlands, Downtown, and the Bay Area.
- US-59/I-69 serves Sugar Land, Greenway, and Downtown.
- Beltway 8 helps connect major job hubs around the city.
- Grand Parkway/SH 99 supports longer suburban commutes.
- 610 Loop connects many inner-loop job centers.
Houston traffic changes quickly. These drive times are realistic planning ranges, not guarantees.
Always test your commute during actual rush hour. Check both morning and evening traffic before committing.
If you work in the Energy Corridor
The Energy Corridor sits along I-10 west of Beltway 8. It includes major energy, engineering, and professional services employers.

Katy gives you more space and newer construction. Memorial gives you a shorter commute and closer city access. Westchase offers a practical middle ground.
METRO’s Addicks Park & Ride and Grand Parkway services can help west-side commuters. Route options include express service toward Downtown and the Texas Medical Center. Check current schedules through METRO’s Park & Ride information.
If you work at the Texas Medical Center
The Texas Medical Center sits south of Downtown near the inner loop. Your best options usually follow I-45, US-59, or surface streets through central Houston.
Best areas to consider
Southgate, West University, and Rice Military-area options
- Typical commute: 5–15 minutes
- Price: $$$ to $$$$
- Best roads: Main Street, Fannin Street, 610 Loop
- Lifestyle: Walkable pockets, historic homes, townhomes, restaurants
Bellaire
- Typical commute: 10–25 minutes
- Price: $$$ to $$$$
- Best roads: 610 Loop, Bellaire Boulevard, Main Street

Pearland is one of the most logical suburban choices for TMC employees. SH 288 gives you a direct route north. Sugar Land works better if you also spend time near Greenway or west Houston.
METRO offers TMC-bound Park & Ride options from several corridors. The 298 Katy Freeway/TMC route can help some west-side commuters. Routes serving the southwest and Gulf Freeway corridors may also fit your location. Confirm current routes through METRO’s official system map.
If you work Downtown
Downtown offers the widest range of housing choices. You can live nearby, use METRO, or commute from several suburban directions.
Best areas to consider
The Heights

- Price: $$ to $$$$
- Best roads: I-45
- Lifestyle: Master-planned neighborhoods, trails, shopping, major local employers
Downtown commuters can benefit from express buses and Park & Ride lots. Katy, Cypress, Spring, Sugar Land, Pearland, and north-side routes can connect to Downtown using HOV lanes.
If you want the shortest daily commute, choose The Heights, Midtown, or another inner-loop location. If you want more space, accept a longer drive from Sugar Land or The Woodlands.
If you work in Galleria, Uptown, or Greenway Plaza
These west-central employment hubs reward a central location. Cross-town commuting can become expensive in time and tolls.
Best areas to consider
West University and Bellaire
- Typical commute: 10–25 minutes
- Price: $$$ to $$$$
- Best roads: 610 Loop, US-59/I-69, Bellaire Boulevard
- Lifestyle: Established neighborhoods and easy access to TMC
The Heights
- Typical commute: 20–35 minutes

Westchase
- Typical commute: 15–30 minutes

Katy

- Price: $$ to $$$
- Best roads: I-10, Grand Parkway, Westpark Tollway
- Lifestyle: Newer homes and planned communities

The Galleria does not have a single direct METRO Park & Ride route from every suburb. Some riders transfer through Downtown, the Texas Medical Center, or the Northwest Transit Center.
For Greenway Plaza, check the final leg carefully. A Park & Ride route may get you close, but you may still need a local bus, rail connection, rideshare, or short walk.
If you work at Port Houston or in the Bay Area
The east and southeast sides deserve separate attention. These commutes can be very manageable when you live nearby.
Port Houston and Ship Channel
Consider:
- Channelview
- Deer Park
- Pasadena
- La Porte
- Baytown
- East Houston
Typical drive times range from 10–35 minutes, depending on the facility and shift schedule.
Price usually lands around $ to $$. You’ll find older homes, newer subdivisions, industrial access, and larger lots.
Your best roads may include I-10, I-610, SH 225, SH 146, and local Ship Channel routes. Shift workers should test the drive at their actual start time. Port commutes often differ from traditional office schedules.
Bay Area and NASA/Clear Lake
Consider:
- League City
- Clear Lake
- Friendswood
- Seabrook
- Kemah
- Pearland
League City to NASA/Clear Lake often takes 10–20 minutes. Pearland to the Texas Medical Center commonly takes 25–45 minutes. Downtown can take 35–65 minutes from the Bay Area during heavier traffic.
Price usually ranges from $$ to $$$.
League City offers newer homes and quick access to NASA. Friendswood offers established neighborhoods and a quieter feel. Clear Lake keeps you closest to the job hub and local amenities.
METRO’s Bay Area services can connect parts of southeast Houston to Downtown and the TMC. Review current routes through METRO’s route and facility pages.
Where do Spring and The Woodlands fit?
Spring and The Woodlands work best for north-side jobs.
The Woodlands is both a residential community and a major employment center. Many residents work nearby, keeping commutes around 5–15 minutes.
Spring can offer:
- Typical commute to The Woodlands: 5–25 minutes
- Price: $$ to $$$
- Best roads: I-45, Hardy Toll Road, Grand Parkway
- Lifestyle: More housing variety and convenient north-side access
Commuting from The Woodlands to Downtown can take 50–80 minutes during peak traffic. The drive may look easy on a map. I-45 congestion can change the experience quickly.
The Woodlands Express also provides commuter service to Downtown and the Texas Medical Center. Check the latest schedule before relying on transit daily.
A simple way to choose your best neighborhood
Start with these questions:
- Where is your office located?
- How many days do you commute each week?
- Can you use HOV lanes or Park & Ride service?
- Which freeway creates your most direct route?
- What happens if traffic adds 20 minutes?
- Do you need access to multiple job hubs?
- What monthly housing payment feels comfortable?
Then compare three areas on the same route.
For example:
- Energy Corridor: Memorial, Katy, and Cypress
- Texas Medical Center: Bellaire, Pearland, and Sugar Land
- Downtown: Midtown, The Heights, and The Woodlands
- Bay Area: Clear Lake, League City, and Pearland
